Flexo vs. Digital Printing for Custom Coffee Sleeves
There are two main ways to print a custom coffee sleeve, and they suit different jobs. Flexographic (flexo) printing uses printing plates to lay down clean, solid colors at very high speed. Full-color digital printing prints directly from a file, no plates required. Picking the right one comes down to your artwork, your quantity, and your budget.
Neither is better in the abstract — they solve different problems. Here’s how to choose.
When flexo wins
Choose flexo when your design is a clean one- or two-color logo and you’re ordering in volume. Because the plates print fast and ink is cheap at scale, flexo delivers the lowest per-sleeve cost on large runs and the crispest solid colors. It’s the workhorse for cafes and chains running tens of thousands of branded sleeves on natural kraft.
When digital wins
Choose full-color digital when the artwork is the point: photo-real images, gradients, multi-color illustrations, or seasonal designs you’ll swap often. Digital has no plate fees, so it’s far cheaper for short runs, test designs, and one-off events — and it lets you print variable designs in a single run.
Side by side
| Factor | Flexo printing | Full-color digital |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Clean 1–2 color logos, big runs | Photo-real art, gradients, short runs |
| Color | Solid spot colors, Pantone match | Full CMYK, unlimited colors |
| Setup cost | One-time plate fee | No plates |
| Cost at volume | Lowest per unit on large runs | Best on small/medium runs |
| Minimum | Higher (plate amortizes over qty) | Lower |
Choosing for your order
If you have a simple logo and big numbers, flexo will be cheapest per cup. If you have rich artwork or you’re testing a design, go digital. Plenty of brands use both — flexo for the everyday kraft sleeve, digital for a limited seasonal edition. When you request a quote, send your artwork and target quantity and we’ll recommend the method and show it on a real sleeve in your free mockup.
